  • Sino Resources' Richard Hughes to Speak at Jewelry Fair Korea 2012

29 Feb 2012 Hong Kong, March 1, 2012 – World-renowned ruby and sapphire expert, Richard W. Hughes, will speak at the up-coming Jewelry Fair Korea 2012 in Seoul on Friday, April 20. This lecture is being co-organized by Korea's GIA Alumni Association. His topic is as follows:

"People and Places: New Directions in East African Gemology"
In today's world, every square meter appears GPS'd and gentrified. And yet, to find adventure all one needs to do is step off the map. Want something new? Move a few meters from the road. Want the experience of a lifetime? Spend a few weeks off the chart in Tanzania.

In much of the world, the haves and those not even close toil side-by-side, each with simultaneous desire and disdain for the other. Perhaps nowhere else on the planet is the contrast as compacted as the few square kilometers that comprise the tanzanite mines of Merelani. This is where First World meets Third, a pressure-cooker that turns brown earth to blue jewels—where envy and avarice squeeze out of the graphite dust that coats all—black, white, and brown—in a sparkling mixture of blood, sweat and indigo tears.

Lying in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the planet's only commercial tanzanite mines have resulted from massive tectonic activity that created one of the most highly mineralized zones in the world — the Mozambique Orogenic Belt. But tanzanite is not the only gem that has formed here.

In this multimedia presentation, Richard Hughes will also venture into central and southern Tanzania in the search for sapphire and spinel. These parts of Tanzania are not simply off the beaten path, but down into some of the darkest corners of the Dark Continent.
